Seeing Jesus in the Old Testament
Did you know that Jesus is in the Old Testament? Not just prophecies about him, and not just illusions to his future coming, but Jesus, as a real character, actively participating in the real story. In fact, he is one of the main characters of the Old Testament, when you learn how to see him. In this Equip class, we will discover how to see him, look at many of the stories he is in, and see how New Testament writers reference his Old Testament actions. This will forever change how you read your Bible.

1. The Two Powers
In this section, we’ll look at why it matters that we see Jesus in the Old Testament, discuss two key ways in which we need to read the Bible, and look at the concept known as the Two Powers in Heaven.

2. The Angel
In this section, we’ll look at a character called “The Angel of the LORD.” We’ll practice noticing details and problems in a few key stories about the Angel.

3. The Word
In this section, we’ll look at a character called “The Word of the LORD.” We’ll see how the Word follows the same descriptive pattern as the Angel, and we’ll see how the New Testament describes Jesus as the Word.

4. The Judge
In this section, we’ll look at a person whom Abraham called “the Judge of all the earth,” we’ll explore at a key verse that the early Church used to explain the relationship between the Father and the Son, and we’ll read some of what the Church Fathers had to say about Jesus being the Judge who met with Abraham.

5. The Shepherd
In this section, we’ll move on to the life of Jacob and explore the Angel whom he called his Shepherd. We’ll see that Jesus later claims this title for himself and acts as the Good Shepherd.

6. The Glory
In this section, we’ll explore the Exodus and Moses’ encounters with the Angel and the Glory on the mountain of God.

7. The Arm
In this final section, we will unpack what it means to be the Arm, the Right Arm, and the Hand. We’ll visit the story of Joshua and the Commander of the LORD’s army. Finally we’ll explore some New Testament passages that use all this language about Jesus.
